Heraldry in the Churches of the English Midlands

Updated version 2

In recent decades, two substantial surveys have been undertaken of the heraldry visible chiefly in churches of the Midlands:

The churches of Warwickshire were surveyed by the late Cris Smith and intended to be published by the Birmingham and Midland Society for Genealogy and Heraldry(BMSGH) under the editorship of Dr Bernard Juby and with illustrations by the late Frank Best. Two volumes appeared, but another four volumes remained in draft. In addition, four books on specific churches, surveyed by Adrian de Redman, John Yates and Bernard Juby, were published.

The East Midlands Heraldry Society undertook and published a survey of the counties of Leicester, Nottingham, Northampton and Rutland.

Both sets of books are now out of print, and so we have digitised them and present them here. In addition, we have assembled an edition of Chis Smith's notes for the unpublished Warwickshire volumes, sadly without the intended illustrations. Ten articles covering churches and other locations in Birmingham which appeared in the BMSGH journal, Midland Ancestor, between 1984 and 1995, are also reproduced here, as is the material compiled by Bernard Juby on the heraldry of Baddesley Clinton.
